Duolingo is excellent at what it does: a free, gamified path through the world's big languages, with an enormous amount of content per course and a proven habit loop. If your child is learning Spanish or French, it is a fine companion. It just has nothing to say in Somali.
Luuqad borrows the parts that work for kids, streaks, XP, short sessions and a leaderboard, and puts them around content that only exists here: canjeero and bariis at breakfast, hooyo and ayeeyo in the family lesson, a countryside story game about packing for the baadiyo. Every word is recorded by a Somali speaker rather than generated by a computer voice, which matters in a language where vowel length changes meaning.
