Luuqad vs Babbel for learning Somali

Babbel and Luuqad both believe in recorded human voices and structured lessons, which already puts them on the same side of the most important argument in language apps. The difference is what they teach and for whom.

Babbel is built for adults who want to reach conversational level in a major European language, with dialogue-based lessons, grammar explanations and live classes. It is very good at that. It does not teach Somali and, with only fourteen languages after more than a decade, it is unlikely to.

Luuqad is built for Somali only, and for children first. The lessons are pictures, native audio and quizzes rather than grammar tables; the games are about Somali life; and parents get a Grown-ups area to follow along. Heritage speakers who understand Somali but freeze when speaking find the vocabulary topics rebuild confidence quickly.
