The sound

A is the most common vowel in Somali. Short a is like the a in "cup" said with the mouth a little more open; long aa, written with two letters, is like the a in "father" and is held about twice as long. Length changes meaning, so children are taught to hear it from the very first lesson.

Example words

Afmouth (short a)
Aabofather (long aa)
Labatwo

Teaching the letter A

Say the letter with a short a after it, "aa", the way Somali children chant the alphabet, then say each example word slowly and let your child find the letter in it. Somali spelling is completely regular, so once a child knows the sound of A they can read it in any word.
