The sound

X is the letter that surprises English speakers most. It is not "ks": it is a strong, breathy h made deep in the throat, the same sound as the Arabic letter ḥa. Whispering a loud h while tightening the throat gets you close. It appears in very common words, so it is worth practising early.

Tip: Hearing X correctly is one reason native audio matters: computer voices usually read it as "ks".

Teaching the letter X

Say the letter with a short a after it, "xa", the way Somali children chant the alphabet, then say each example word slowly and let your child find the letter in it. Somali spelling is completely regular, so once a child knows the sound of X they can read it in any word.
