Colors topic in the Luuqad app

Meaning

Guduud means red. It is the colour of the Somali flag's neighbours' flags, of tomatoes and of a child's favourite ball, and it is one of the first colour words children learn. Casaan is another word for red, common in some regions, so you may hear both.

Example sentences

Baabuurku waa guduud. The car is red.
Yaanyadu waa guduud. The tomato is red.

Using Guduud at home

Point at the real thing and say "Guduud" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Guduud is taught with a picture, tested in the Colors quiz and practised in Coloring.

Also heard: Casaan. Families use different forms depending on region and generation; the app records the form shown above.
