Kow

1 (one)

KOW (rhymes with "how")
Numbers topic in the Luuqad app

Meaning

Kow is the number one and the first word of every Somali count. It is used for counting aloud; when "one" describes a noun, Somali often uses hal instead, as in hal buug (one book). Children usually learn kow, laba, saddex as a chant before they know what the words mean.

Tip: Kow is also the word for "first" in kowaad: fasalka kowaad is the first class.

Example sentences

Kow, laba, saddex!One, two, three!
Waa kow.It is one.

Using Kow at home

Point at the real thing and say "Kow" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Kow is taught with a picture, tested in the Numbers quiz and practised in Market Day and Number Match.
