The longer answer
Memrise used to be the best of the big apps for Somali, not because it made a course, but because anyone could. Its community courses let volunteers build flashcard decks, and several Somali decks with vocabulary lists existed. In 2024 Memrise moved all community-created content off the main app to a separate site, and since then the main app has focused on its official courses for 23 languages.
Those community decks were text flashcards of uneven quality, mostly without audio and without any review by a native editor. They can still be useful for an adult who wants a word list, but they were never designed for children and they are not part of the Memrise app most people download today.
Luuqad's 250 words and phrases are reviewed, illustrated and recorded by native speakers, and every topic has a quiz. For a child, that is the difference between a list and a lesson.
What to use instead
For children and families, Luuqad is built only for Somali: 18 real-life topics, 250 words and phrases with native-speaker audio, a quiz for every topic, 12 games and a Grown-ups area. It is free to download on iPhone and iPad. Browse every word it teaches before you install anything.
For adults who want a large travel vocabulary fast, uTalk, Ling, LinGo Play also offer Somali content. Our alternatives page compares all of them honestly.
