The sound

C is the other letter English speakers find hard. It is never the c of "cat" or "city": it is a voiced sound made by tightening the throat, the same as the Arabic letter ʿayn. Start saying "ah" while squeezing the throat, as if lifting something heavy, and you are close. Many everyday words begin with it.

Tip: A useful trick for children: C is the sound at the start of the Somali name Cali (Ali).

Example words

Teaching the letter C

Say the letter with a short a after it, "ca", the way Somali children chant the alphabet, then say each example word slowly and let your child find the letter in it. Somali spelling is completely regular, so once a child knows the sound of C they can read it in any word.
