Soosali

Purple · also Carwaaji

soo-SA-li
Soosali = purple
Colors topic in the Luuqad app

Meaning

Soosali is the word the app teaches for purple, with carwaaji as an alternative. Purple has several names across the Somali-speaking world, and many families simply describe it as a mix of red and blue, so do not be surprised if a grandparent uses a different word.

Tip: If a relative uses another word for purple, that is normal: this colour varies by region more than any other.

Example sentences

Ubaxu waa soosali.The flower is purple.
Diracdu waa soosali.The dress is purple.

Using Soosali at home

Point at the real thing and say "Soosali" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Soosali is taught with a picture, tested in the Colors quiz and practised in Coloring.

Also heard: Carwaaji. Families use different forms depending on region and generation; the app records the form shown above.
