Meaning

Waan xanuunsanahay means i am sick. Xanuun means pain or illness, xanuunsan means sick, and with waan and -ahay the sentence is I am sick. It covers anything from a cold to a real illness. The usual reply is Maxaa ku haya? (what is wrong with you?, literally what has hold of you), and relatives add the wish Alle ha ku caafiyo, may God heal you. To say where it hurts, name the body part: Madaxa ayaa i xanuunaya, my head hurts.
