Meaning

Baasto is pasta, usually spaghetti, and a legacy of the Italian period in southern Somalia. It is served with a spiced meat and tomato sauce, suugo, and eaten with a spoon and fork or, at home, by hand. Many Somali children rank baasto above bariis.

Tip: Baasto with suugo (sauce) is Somali comfort food, and the word came from Italian pasta.

Example sentences

Baasto ayaan cunay.I ate pasta.
Baastadu waa macaan tahay. The pasta is delicious.

Using Baasto at home

Point at the real thing and say "Baasto" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Baasto is taught with a picture, tested in the Food quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Market Day.
