Meaning

Hilib means meat in general. Somali cooking uses hilib ari (goat), hilib lo' (beef), hilib geel (camel) and hilib adhi (sheep and goat together), and the type is added after the word. Hilib is at the heart of lunch and of every celebration.

Tip: Add the animal after hilib: hilib ari is goat meat, hilib geel is camel meat.

Example sentences

Hilib ma cuntaa?Do you eat meat?
Hilibka waa la kariyay. The meat has been cooked.

Using Hilib at home

Point at the real thing and say "Hilib" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Hilib is taught with a picture, tested in the Food quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Market Day.
