Meaning

Dawaco is the fox. In Somali folk tales the fox is the clever trickster who outwits bigger animals, so calling someone a dawaco means they are cunning. In the countryside the same word is used for the jackal, which looks similar. Dawaco is feminine: the fox is dawacada, and the plural is dawacooyin.

Tip: Dawaco is a feminine noun, so this is a fox is tani waa dawaco, with tani rather than kani.

Example sentences

Dawacadu waa caqli badan tahay. The fox is clever.

Using Dawaco at home

Point at the real thing and say "Dawaco" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once.
