Doofaar

Pig

DOO-faar · Both vowels are long: hold the oo and the aa.
Doofaar (Pig): illustration from the Luuqad Animals lesson

Meaning

Doofaar is the pig. Because Somalis are Muslim and do not eat pork, pigs are not part of home life, and children in the diaspora usually meet the word at a farm, in a picture book or at the zoo. It is still a word worth knowing: the pig is doofaarka.

Example sentences

Kani waa doofaar. This is a pig.
Doofaarku waa buuran yahay. The pig is fat.

Using Doofaar at home

Point at the real thing and say "Doofaar" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Doofaar is taught with a picture, tested in the Animals quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Animal Trails.
