Meaning

Geel is the camel, the animal at the heart of Somali life. Camels give milk, carry the aqal when a family moves, and appear in proverbs, poetry and wedding gifts. Geel is a collective word for camels as a group, so it is used for a whole herd as well as for the animal in general; the camels are geela.

Tip: One male camel is awr, one female camel is hal, and a baby camel is nirig.

Example sentences

Waxaan jeclahay geela.I love camels.

Using Geel at home

Point at the real thing and say "Geel" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Geel is taught with a picture, tested in the Animals quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Animal Trails.
