Snake
Mas is the snake. It is a short word used for any snake, from the harmless ones in picture books to the dangerous ones people in the countryside watch out for. The snake is maska.
Tip: Mas is one of the shortest animal words in Somali: three letters, one syllable.
Point at the real thing and say "Mas" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once.
