Meaning

Ri is the goat, one of the most common animals in Somali life. Goats are the small livestock of almost every countryside family, kept for milk and meat, and goat meat is served at many Somali celebrations. Ri is feminine: the goat is rida and the plural is riyo. Sheep and goats together as a flock are adhi.

Tip: A male goat has its own word, orgi.

Example sentences

Tani waa ri.This is a goat.
Ridu waa yar tahay. The goat is small.

Using Ri at home

Point at the real thing and say "Ri" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Ri is taught with a picture, tested in the Animals quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Animal Trails.
