Il

Eye

IL · A short i, as in the English word ill.
Il (Eye): illustration from the Luuqad Face & Body lesson

Meaning

Il is the eye. It is one of the shortest words in Somali and one of the most irregular: the eye is isha, because il plus the feminine article -ta becomes isha, and the plural is indho, so the eyes is indhaha. Children usually learn indho first, because eyes come in pairs.

Tip: Il, isha, indho: one eye, the eye, eyes. Learn all three together.

Example sentences

Indhaha xir.Close your eyes.
Isha ayaa i xanuunaysa. My eye hurts.

Using Il at home

Point at the real thing and say "Il" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Il is taught with a picture, tested in the Face & Body quiz and practised in Drag & Learn.
