Unit 2 · First Words · Wajiga & Jidhka

Somali face & body words

Body words are practical Somali. They come up at bath time, at the doctor, when a child falls over and needs to say where it hurts. They are also the easiest words to practise physically: point to your san (nose), wiggle your faro (fingers), stamp your cago (feet).

About the Face & Body topic

Most body parts in Somali are short, one- or two-syllable words, and many form their plural by a change inside the word rather than an ending, so il (eye) becomes indho (eyes) and gacan (hand) becomes gacmo (hands). We show the singular the app teaches and mention the plural where it is useful.

All fifteen words have native-speaker audio and illustrations from the app's Face & Body lesson.
