Hair

TI-mo · Short vowels, with the stress on ti.

Meaning

Timo means hair, the hair on your head. It is always plural in Somali: a single strand is tin, and the hair is timaha. Hair care is a big part of Somali family life, from combing to braiding, so timaha shanlee, comb your hair, is heard in every home.

Tip: Because timo is plural, adjectives go plural too: dheer, long, becomes dhaadheer.

Example sentences

Timaha shanlee.Comb your hair.
Timaheedu waa dhaadheer yihiin. Her hair is long.

Using Timo at home

Point at the real thing and say "Timo" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Timo is taught with a picture, tested in the Face & Body quiz and practised in Drag & Learn.
