Meaning

Jaakad is a jacket. It is feminine: the jacket is jaakadda, and the plural is jaakado. For families in cold countries it is one of the most-used clothing words of the year, usually in the sentence jaakaddaada gasho, waa qabow: put your jacket on, it is cold.

Tip: You may also hear jaakeet, closer to the English word.

Jaakaddu waa diirran tahay. The jacket is warm.

Using Jaakad at home

Point at the real thing and say "Jaakad" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Jaakad is taught with a picture, tested in the Clothing quiz and practised in Drag & Learn.
