Meaning

Dirac is the light, flowing dress worn by Somali women, usually over a petticoat called gorgorad and with a garbasaar over the shoulders. The app glosses it as dress, but it is a specific Somali garment, worn for weddings, Eid and everyday elegance. It is masculine: the dirac is diraca.

Tip: The word ends with the throat closing on the c, not with a k or an s sound.

Example sentences

Hooyo dirac ayay xidhan tahay.Mom is wearing a dirac.
Dirac cusub ayaan rabaa.I want a new dirac.

Using Dirac at home

Point at the real thing and say "Dirac" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Dirac is taught with a picture, tested in the Clothing quiz and practised in Drag & Learn.
