Aabo

Father

AA-bo · The first aa is long: hold it, then a short bo.
Aabo (Father): illustration from the Luuqad Family lesson

Meaning

Aabo means father, and it is the word children use to call their dad, like "Dad" in English. The formal word is aabbe, and "my father" is aabahay. Somali fathers often call their children aabo back, as a term of endearment, so a small child may be greeted with "aabo!" by their own father.

Tip: If your father calls you aabo, he is not confused: it is affection, and hooyo works the same way.

Example sentences

Aabo, halkan kaalay.Dad, come here.
Aabahay waa dhakhtar. My father is a doctor.

Using Aabo at home

Point at the real thing and say "Aabo" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Aabo is taught with a picture, tested in the Family quiz and practised in Word Match.
