Meaning

Adeer means uncle on your father's side: your father's brother. Somali distinguishes him from abti, your mother's brother, and the difference matters at family gatherings. Adeer is also the polite way to address any man of your father's generation, so a child may call a family friend adeer. Adeerkay is my uncle; ina adeer is a cousin on the father's side.

Tip: Father's side: adeer (uncle) and eedo (aunt). Mother's side: abti (uncle) and habaryar (aunt).

Example sentences

Adeerkay maanta wuu imanayaa. My uncle is coming today.
Adeer, mahadsanid.Uncle, thank you.

Using Adeer at home

Point at the real thing and say "Adeer" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Adeer is taught with a picture, tested in the Family quiz and practised in Word Match.
