Meaning

Abti means uncle on your mother's side: your mother's brother. In Somali culture the abti has a special, affectionate role, and the word is also used warmly for any man of your mother's generation. Abtigay is my uncle; ina abti is a cousin on the mother's side.

Tip: A quick way to remember: abti and hooyo both belong to the mother's side.

Example sentences

Abtigay hadiyad buu ii keenay. My uncle brought me a gift.
Abti, ma i caawin kartaa?Uncle, can you help me?

Using Abti at home

Point at the real thing and say "Abti" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Abti is taught with a picture, tested in the Family quiz and practised in Word Match.
