Aboowe

Brother · also Walaal

a-BOO-we · Long oo in the middle: a-BOO-we.
Aboowe (Brother): illustration from the Luuqad Family lesson

Meaning

Aboowe means brother, and especially older brother; it is what a child calls a brother directly, and it is also used warmly for any older boy or man who looks after you. Walaal means sibling and is used for brothers and sisters alike: walaalkay is my brother, walaashay is my sister.

Tip: Walaal, sibling, is also how Somalis address strangers politely: "walaal, iga raali ahow" (excuse me, brother/sister).

Example sentences

Aboowe, i caawi.Brother, help me.
Aboowahay waa dheer yahay. My brother is tall.

Using Aboowe at home

Point at the real thing and say "Aboowe" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Aboowe is taught with a picture, tested in the Family quiz and practised in Word Match.

Also heard: Walaal. Families use different forms depending on region and generation; the app records the form shown above.
