Fadlan

Please

FAD-lan
Small Talk topic in the Luuqad app

Meaning

Fadlan means please and comes from the Arabic word for kindness. Put it before or after a request: Fadlan, biyo i sii, or Biyo i sii, fadlan. Somali is often direct at home, so parents give short commands without it, but fadlan is expected with strangers, in shops and in any formal setting. When someone does what you asked, follow with Mahadsanid.

Using Fadlan at home

Use "Fadlan" in the moment it belongs to, not as a drill: say it, wait, and accept any answer in Somali or English. Children learn phrases from hearing them at the right time, and the native recording on this page gives you the model to copy.
