Waan fiicanahay

I am fine

waan fii-'a-NA-hay · c is a deep sound from the throat, not an English c; there is a slight catch where the c is.

Meaning

Waan fiicanahay means i am fine. Waan is I plus the focus marker waa, fiican means good or well, and the ending -ahay means I am, so the phrase is literally I am well. It is the standard answer to Iska warran and Sidee tahay. Somalis often add Mahadsanid (thank you) or Alxamdulillaah (praise be to God), and then return the question with Adiguna? (and you?). The same pattern, waan plus an adjective plus -ahay, builds most of the feeling sentences in the Express Emotion topic.
