SUUQ · Long uu, then a q from the back of the throat.
Suuq (Market): illustration from the Luuqad City lesson

Meaning

Suuq means market. It came from Arabic and is a masculine noun, suuqa, with the plural suuqyo. A Somali suuq is a place of conversation and bargaining, not fixed prices; Bakaaraha in Mogadishu is the most famous. In the diaspora the word also covers the Somali mall or the corner shop where the family buys its bariis.

Tip: Pair suuq with the Ordering topic: waa meeqa? (how much is it?) is what you say once you get there.

Example sentences

Suuqa ayaan tagaynaa. We are going to the market.
Hooyo suuqa ayay joogtaa.Mother is at the market.

Using Suuq at home

Point at the real thing and say "Suuq" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Suuq is taught with a picture, tested in the City quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey.
