Habaryar

Aunt (mother's sister) · also Habo

HA-bar-yar
Habaryar (Aunt (mother's sister)): illustration from the Luuqad Family lesson

Meaning

Habaryar means aunt on your mother's side: your mother's sister. It is made of habar, an old word for mother or woman, and yar, small or young, so it literally means "little mother", which is exactly how many children feel about her. Habo is the short, affectionate form. Habaryartay is my aunt.

Tip: Habar (mother) + yar (little): your mother's sister is your "little mother".

Example sentences

Habaryartay waxay ku nooshahay London. My aunt lives in London.
Habaryar, mahadsanid.Aunt, thank you.

Using Habaryar at home

Point at the real thing and say "Habaryar" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Habaryar is taught with a picture, tested in the Family quiz and practised in Word Match.

Also heard: Habo. Families use different forms depending on region and generation; the app records the form shown above.
