Meaning

Canjeero is the spongy, slightly sour fermented flatbread eaten at breakfast across Somalia, cooked on a flat pan so one side is smooth and the other is covered in tiny holes. It is usually torn by hand and eaten with sugar and ghee, with tea, or with suqaar. It is related to Ethiopian injera but thinner and softer. Canjeero is the taste of a Somali morning, and no general language app teaches the word.

Tip: In the north it is often called laxoox; both words describe the same breakfast.

Example sentences

Subax walba canjeero baan cunaa.I eat canjeero every morning.
Canjeeradu waa macaan tahay. The canjeero is delicious.

Using Canjeero at home

Point at the real thing and say "Canjeero" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Canjeero is taught with a picture, tested in the Food quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Market Day.
