Meaning

Guri is a house, and also home. It is masculine: the house is guriga and the plural is guryo. The traditional portable home of the countryside has its own name, aqal, so guri usually means a built house in a town, or a family's home in general, as in gurigayaga, our home.

Tip: Guriga tag, go home, and guriga joog, stay at home, are two of the first commands children understand.

Example sentences

Kani waa gurigayaga. This is our house.
Gurigu waa weyn yahay. The house is big.

Using Guri at home

Point at the real thing and say "Guri" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Guri is taught with a picture, tested in the House quiz and practised in Heritage Hunt and Drag & Learn.
