KUR-si · A short u, as in put, with a rolled r.
Kursi (Chair): illustration from the Luuqad House lesson

Meaning

Kursi is a chair. It is masculine: the chair is kursiga, and the plural is irregular, kuraas. The word comes from Arabic, like many Somali words for furniture. Kursiga ku fadhiiso, sit on the chair, is a phrase every child hears at the table.

Tip: One kursi, many kuraas: the plural does not simply add an ending.

Example sentences

Kursiga ku fadhiiso.Sit on the chair.
Kani waa kursi. This is a chair.

Using Kursi at home

Point at the real thing and say "Kursi" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Kursi is taught with a picture, tested in the House quiz and practised in Heritage Hunt and Drag & Learn.
