Ey

Dog

EY · Rhymes with the English word day.
Ey (Dog): illustration from the Luuqad Animals lesson

Meaning

Ey is the dog. In Somali culture dogs are working animals that guard homes and herds and live outside, rather than indoor pets, so this is a word many diaspora children learn from their new surroundings rather than from home. Ey is masculine: the dog is eyga and the plural is eyo. You will also see it spelled eey.

Tip: Ey is the shortest word in the Animals topic: two letters, one sound.

Example sentences

Kani waa ey.This is a dog.
Eygu wuu ciyayaa. The dog is barking.

Using Ey at home

Point at the real thing and say "Ey" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Ey is taught with a picture, tested in the Animals quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Animal Trails.
