BU-ka
Buka (Sick): illustration from the Luuqad Emotions lesson

Meaning

Buka means sick or ill. Unlike the other feeling words it behaves like a verb: waan bukaa, I am sick; wuu bukaa, he is sick; way buktaa, she is sick. Xanuunsan is the adjective with the same meaning, from xanuun, pain or illness: waan xanuunsanahay, I am sick. A sick person, a patient, is bukaan.

Tip: Buka takes verb endings, xanuunsan takes the adjective pattern: waan bukaa, waan xanuunsanahay.

Example sentences

Waan bukaa.I am sick.
Cunuggu wuu bukaa. The child is sick.

Using Buka at home

Point at the real thing and say "Buka" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Buka is taught with a picture, tested in the Emotions quiz and practised in Tap the Word.

Also heard: Xanuunsan. Families use different forms depending on region and generation; the app records the form shown above.
