Biyo (Water): illustration from the Luuqad Food lesson

Meaning

Biyo means water. It is one of the most important words in the language, in a land where rain and wells decide everything, and it is the word children learn to ask for first. The Baadiyo Journey game in the app sends children to find biyo for the family.

Tip: Biyo is plural in Somali grammar, which is why it takes plural verbs: biyuhu waa qabow yihiin, the water is cold.

Example sentences

Biyo ma i siin kartaa? Can I have some water?
Biyo cab.Drink water.

Using Biyo at home

Point at the real thing and say "Biyo" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Biyo is taught with a picture, tested in the Food quiz and practised in Baadiyo Journey and Market Day.
