Meaning

Macalin means teacher. It came into Somali from Arabic, and it is the word used for a weekday school teacher, a weekend dugsi teacher and a Qur'an teacher alike. A female teacher is macalimad, and teachers as a group are macalimiin. Children address a teacher simply as macalin.

Tip: Macalin, fasal and qalin all arrived through Arabic and religious schooling, and all three are now everyday Somali.

Example sentences

Macalinku waa fiican yahay. The teacher is good.
Kani waa macalinkayga. This is my teacher.

Using Macalin at home

Point at the real thing and say "Macalin" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Macalin is taught with a picture, tested in the School quiz and practised in Tap the Word.
