Unit 4 · Out & About · Dugsiga

Somali school words

School words matter twice in the diaspora: once for talking about the child's weekday school in Somali, and again for the weekend Somali or Qur'an school, the dugsi, that many families attend. Macalin (teacher), buug (book), qalin (pen) and laylis (homework) come up in both.

About the School topic

This is a compact topic of nine words. Several have Arabic roots, a reminder of how much of Somali learning culture has travelled through religious education: macalin, fasal (class) and qalin all arrived that way and are now thoroughly Somali.

In the app the School lesson is part of the Out & About unit, and teachers running Saturday schools use it as a warm-up vocabulary set.
