Roof

SA-qaf · The q is made far back in the mouth, deeper than a k.
Saqaf (Roof): illustration from the Luuqad House lesson

Meaning

Saqaf is the roof, and also the ceiling seen from inside. It is masculine: the roof is saqafka. The word comes from Arabic, as do many Somali building words. The countryside aqal has a different kind of roof altogether: a curved frame of poles covered with woven mats.

Tip: Sa-qaf, not sa-kaf: the q sits deep in the throat.

Example sentences

Saqafku waa dheer yahay. The ceiling is high.
Shimbir ayaa saqafka saaran.A bird is on the roof.

Using Saqaf at home

Point at the real thing and say "Saqaf" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Saqaf is taught with a picture, tested in the House quiz and practised in Heritage Hunt and Drag & Learn.
