Meaning

Burjiko is a stove or cooker. In Somali homes it is also the name of the small charcoal stove used for cooking and for making tea, so the word covers both the traditional brazier and the modern kitchen cooker. It is feminine: the stove is burjikada.

Tip: Fire is dab, so dabka shid, light the fire, uses the same verb as burjikada shid.

Example sentences

Burjikada shid.Light the stove.
Burjikadu waa kulul tahay. The stove is hot.

Using Burjiko at home

Point at the real thing and say "Burjiko" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Burjiko is taught with a picture, tested in the House quiz and practised in Heritage Hunt and Drag & Learn.
