Meaning

Telefishin is the television, borrowed from English and reshaped to Somali sounds. It is masculine: the TV is telefishinka. You will also see telefishan, and simply TV. Telefishinka dami, turn off the TV, is a sentence children learn to recognise fast.

Tip: Borrowed words follow Somali spelling: no v, no double letters that are not pronounced.

Example sentences

Telefishinka dami.Turn off the TV.
Waxaan daawanayaa telefishinka.I am watching television.

Using Telefishin at home

Point at the real thing and say "Telefishin" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Telefishin is taught with a picture, tested in the House quiz and practised in Heritage Hunt and Drag & Learn.
