Unit 5 · Everyday Life · Hawlaha

Somali activities words

Until now the topics have been nouns: things you can point at. Activities introduces verbs, the words that turn a list into a language. With just these ten, a child can give and follow instructions all day: cun (eat), cab (drink), seexo (sleep), ciyaar (play), akhri (read).

About the Activities topic

The forms taught here are the command forms, the way a parent speaks to one child. That is deliberate: it is the form children hear most, and it is the shortest form of the verb, so it is the easiest to learn first. Longer forms, like "I am eating" (waan cunayaa), come later in the app's Express Emotion and Small Talk lessons.

Each verb has an illustration and native audio, and the app quizzes them by picture, sound and matching.
