Baraf

Snow

BA-raf
Baraf (Snow): illustration from the Luuqad Weather lesson

Meaning

Baraf means snow, and it also means ice. The same word covers the snow on a Minneapolis driveway and the ice cubes in a glass of water; context does the rest. It is a masculine noun: barafka. To say it is snowing, use baraf baa da'aya, snow is falling.

Tip: One word, two jobs: baraf is both the snow outside and the ice in your drink.

Example sentences

Baraf baa da'aya.It is snowing.
Biyaha baraf ku rid.Put ice in the water.

Using Baraf at home

Point at the real thing and say "Baraf" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Baraf is taught with a picture, tested in the Weather quiz and practised in Tap the Word.
