Meaning

Dayax is the moon. It is a masculine noun: dayaxa, the moon. The moon matters in Somali family life because the Islamic calendar follows it: the sighting of the new moon marks the start of Ramadan and of Eid. A satellite is dayax gacmeed, literally a hand-made moon.

Tip: Look for the crescent with your child before Eid and name it: dayaxa, the moon.

Example sentences

Dayaxu waa qurux badan yahay. The moon is beautiful.
Habeenkii dayaxa ayaan arkay.Last night I saw the moon.

Using Dayax at home

Point at the real thing and say "Dayax" whenever it comes up, then let your child hear the native recording and say it back. One word used ten times in a day beats ten words drilled once. In the Luuqad app, Dayax is taught with a picture, tested in the Weather quiz and practised in Tap the Word.
